The thing nobody tells you about smart bulbs

Some Zigbee bulbs are routers: they pass messages along for other devices. Others are end devices: they only talk for themselves. Spec sheets rarely say which is which, and it’s the difference between a mesh that heals itself and one that drops 14 lights at midnight.

Our rule now: use router bulbs in fixtures whose wall switch stays on, and save non-repeating bulbs for the edges of the house.
